This ESPN Broadcast(yes ESPN used to cover Rodeo!) is from the 1997 Calgary Stampede & JW’s early years of Bull Riding!
These are the  2 rides from the Stampede event that helped him win the 50k bonus money.
The first is a fabulous ride and showcases how great a rider JW really was.
The 2nd is a wreck like we have never ever seen before!
This matchup of JW and Kodiak was actually highly anticipated because Kodiak was a champion bull.
Kodiak was one of the top bulls in 1997 and not been covered much if at all.
It takes a moment for everyone to realize the bull is caughtup in the chutes and JW did stay on for 8 seconds-but JW hops off knowing something is not right and the bull is helpless.Kodiak does get untangled from the chutes-and seems fine.but sadly he broke his leg and had to be put down.Kodiak was loved and treasured and it was a big blow to the rodeo family,and completely devastated owner and legendary stock contractor Harvey Northcott.
It is quite a sight-and the announcers add to the drama by pointing out just how rare this type of wreck really is.
